Profile
After obtaining her PhD in King's College, Tara commenced her research career in the Paediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit at the Royal Brompton and National Heart Hospital, London. While there, she was involved in a number of research projects in asthma and allergy. She then joined the University of Southampton Child Health Department as a Senior Research Fellow in 1991 where she led the food allergy research group.
She joined University of Portsmouth in 2000 and has continued with her research in the area of allergic disorders and leads a successful team. She is also the Honorary Deputy Director at the Asthma and Allergy Research Centre on the Isle of Wight whose activity in this area is internationally recognised.
In 2007 she was made the Professor of Health Sciences and Associate head of School of Health Sciences and Social Work. She was made Associate Dear (Research) at the Faculty of Science in 2009 and in 2011 was promoted to the role of Director of Research for the University. This is a university wide strategic role where she advise the Vice Chancellor Executive on all research policy matters, including institutional relationships with the Research Councils, the European Commission, major charities and HEFCE. She leads on the development and implementation of university’s research strategy and coordinates the REF submission for the university.
Professor Dean also supervises students in the School of Health Sciences and Social Work.
