Profile

The role of Research and Commercialisation Manager is to develop and manage the implementation of University policies and procedures concerning Research, Knowledge Transfer (KT) and Intellectual Property (IP).

The key responsibilities of this post are:

To lead the research and KT contracts provision of the University and to negotiate collaborative agreements with external companies/organisations in accordance with University policies; to identify and protect commercially valuable University intellectual property; to liaise with academics, and professional advisors towards commercial exploitation of the University's IP portfolio; to manage the research support and contracts functions of the department and to act as Deputy to the Head of Service 

Resume

Kate graduated from the University of Exeter with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry (1994) and a PhD in Materials Chemistry (1998). Following a period as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Surrey, Kate moved her research career to industry, where she also managed the analytical  laboratory service for group companies and clients of a global Industrial Minerals business. In 2001, Kate joined Cardiff University as a Research Development Officer and gained much valuable experience whilst assisting researchers to develop multi-disciplinary research proposals, collaborative and commercial opportunities; specialising in the management, assessment and exploitation of intellectual property in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical sectors. In 2005, Kate moved to the University of Southampton, where she was appointed as a Contract Manager with responsibility for negotiating research, clinical trial and consultancy contracts on behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. Kate joined the University of Portsmouth, being appointed to her current post of Research and Commercialisation Manager, in January 2007. Kate is also the acting Head of Department.
