Researcher Development Programme

The University of Portsmouth Researcher Development Programme provides professional skills and career development workshops and events for research and academic staff. It brings together nearly 60 workshops and events, all of which will take place on campus during the current academic year, and are available for all research and academic staff.  

The University of Portsmouth Researcher Development Programme represents a step change in the range and depth of opportunities available for staff to invest in their own professional and career development while here at Portsmouth.

Research Concordat

The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers’ is an agreement between research funders, the University of Portsmouth and other employers of researchers in the UK. Sitting alongside a range of local, UK and European initiatives, this agreement represents a significant development in national policy to support good management of researchers and their careers.

Through the implementation of its principles it aims to enhance the researcher workforce and thereby sustain research excellence bringing benefits to the health, economy and well-being of the UK.

In 2012 the University conducted a review of its policies and practices comparing them to the principles of the concordat. Subsequently a gap analysis was created highlighting the support that the University already provides as well as bringing to prominence the areas in which the institution can improve.

In early 2015, we have documented our progress and updated our action plan. We have also produced a short report that highlights the main achievements to date and provides a focus for the next two years.

Staff Forums and Networks

We have a number of ways staff can meet together, share their views and keep up-to-date. These include our Professors’ Forum, Readers’ Forums and Researchers’ Network. We also have a Research Staff Forum and Forums for Early Career Researchers in specific faculties. HR Excellence in Research Award

The University has been awarded the European Commission Human Resources Excellence in Research Award. The Award is given to organisations which have a robust strategy for improving the career development and management of its researchers. This award acknowledges the institution's alignment with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment.

As part of our commitment to supporting researchers we monitor the view of our researchers through participation in the Principal Investigators and Research Leaders Survey (PIRLS) and Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS). Both surveys are conducted every two years. Reports on the 2013 PRILS (pirls-2013 link) and CROS (cros-2013 link) surveys are available and the 2015 surveys will be available later this year.
