REF 2014

REF 2014 logo Welcome to the University of Portsmouth's Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission - information pages.

This site has been designed to provide relevant and up to date information on the REF including how the REF will work, REF and Impact, REF timetable, University’s REF Steering group and REF updates and news.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new process for assessing research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and is the successor to the 2008 RAE.

The REF will be undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies, to:

  • Inform the selective allocation of research funding to HEIs;
  • Provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks;
  • Provide accountability for public investment in research and demonstrate its benefits.

Through the REF, the UK funding bodies aim to develop and sustain a dynamic and internationally competitive research sector that makes a major contribution to economic prosperity, national wellbeing and the expansion and dissemination of knowledge. It will also help to justify the case for public spending in this area.

The University is preparing for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF) where it will demonstrate the excellent research being undertaken at Portsmouth.  Full information on the REF can be found on the REF website.
