About translation at Portsmouth
The graduate translation programme at the University of Portsmouth, housed in the School of Languages and Area Studies, is the hub for a wide range of activities aimed at students, scholars and practitioners of translation. This page gives you a quick introduction to who we are, what we do and what makes translation such an exciting and flexible career.
We offer a suite of Masters courses in translation and a Translation PhD programme. The school also offers an Applied Languages degree for students interested in studying translation at undergraduate level. Our staff include translation trainers, researchers and professional freelance translators. We run an annual translation conference for researchers, students and professionals which is now in its eleventh year. We also run regular seminars, workshops and training events in cooperation with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and other partners.
In May 2011 Portsmouth's MA Translation Studies programme became a member of the European Masters in Translation network run by the Directorate-General for Translation at the European Commission. This recognises the quality of our training and of our preparation for the translation profession. Since 2010 we have been a member of the OPTIMALE network (Optimising Professional Translator Training in a Multilingual Europe), an Academic Erasmus Network Project under the Erasmus Lifelong Learning programme. Portsmouth is one of the member universities of the National Network for Translation which aims to raise the profile of the profession in the UK, in order to meet the urgent international need for qualified translators with English as a first language.
