Using animals in research

Animal welfare

Frogs in the laboratory

The welfare of animals used in research is of paramount importance to us. Good science and good animal welfare go hand in hand. We house our animals in excellent conditions, as required by the Home Office, and make sure they receive the best possible care from a team including an experienced vet and technicians.

The animals kept at the University of Portsmouth are mainly mice and frogs. While these might seem very distinct from human beings, because so many of their basic cellular, developmental and disease processes are the same as ours they can be used as models for the study of human illness.
