I graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 1996, specialising in historical and theoretical studies in Art, Design and Media. Since then I have taught theoretical studies to all the studio based courses within the School. I am currently a senior lecturer in Visual Culture.

My teaching focus is: identity politics, in particular, the way the body is used in a variety of media to present specific ideologies relating to class, gender and ethnicity. I am a staunch advocate for both archival and oral history research methods.

I have contributed extensively to the oral history archives at Portsmouth Museum and Records Service and this research can be seen in the Portsmouth at Play exhibition, at Portsmouth City Museum, U.K.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Visual Culture: Level 6 year co-ordinator
  • Visual Culture: Dissertation (L6), Unit co-ordinator and dissertation supervisor
  • Visual Culture: Issues of Representation (L5), Unit co-ordinator and lecturer
  • Introduction to Visual Culture; Fashion and Textile Design (L4) Unit co-ordinator and lecturer

My current academic research project is concerned with cinema exhibition practice and the role of the cinema usherette within this. It explores how her presence functioned as an ideologically charged mediator between the cinema audience and broader discourses of desire, femininity and identity. This research is forming an international educational archive  - see A book, Stars in the Aisles is currently in preparation.
