Marine Research Platform

Marine Research Platform

The Institute of Marine Sciences has a strong heritage in marine exposure trials. The research platform is moored in a tidal channel in Langstone Harbour providing a fully marine exposure environment with high water exchange. Panels, structures or equipment can be suspended in the water column from the surface to the sea bed. This unique facility is available for short and long-term marine monitoring and immersion trials including:

  • Marine fouling & anti-fouling trials
  • Immersion, Exposure and Abrasion trials
  • Attachment of remote sensing or monitoring equipment
  • Tidal turbine technology trials

Aquatic Centre hire

Our aquatic centre houses a state-of-the-art aquarium and processed sea-water system. A large range of tanks are available to hire supported by a flexible plumbing system to accommodate most requirements. The aquarium is supported by a suite of molecular, general and sediment laboratories. The centre also has a flat roof with access for exposure and monitoring equipment.

The facilities can be used for:

  • Commercial aquaculture trials
  • Short-term holding of organisms, including non-native species
  • Ecotoxicology assays
  • Breeding trials

Case Studies

Fouling Testing

Thales

After a consultation process with staff at IMS, Thales UK Ltd commissioned an immersion trial on the IMS research platform to test the anti-fouling properties of various novel materials. Coated panels were submersed for several months in Langstone Harbour, during which inspection and monitoring surveys were conducted by IMS staff.  On removal, the panels underwent fouling adhesion tests and final wet biomass measurements, and reports generated summarising the findings.

Utilising commercially available space on our research platform moored in Langstone Harbour, staff at the Institute of Marine Sciences were commissioned by Balmoral Offshore Engineering to test a new marine antifouling system (Balmoral CuNiClad™). After several months of sub-tidal immersion the results have been spectacular with the treated panels showing very little growth compared to the untreated controls. It is hoped that further collaboration will enable future trials to be conducted.

Conference and education centre

Conference and education centre

The Institute of Marine Sciences provides a unique location to host conferences, training events or hold meetings.  The excellent teaching and learning centre has capacity for 120 delegates. All rooms for hire are equipped with modern computing and audio-visual projection facilities, allowing clients to use animation, video-streamed material and e-learning.  In addition, all events can be catered for, via the university catering services which offer a range of services to cater for most budgets and dietary requirements.

Chinook II Research Vessel

Chinook II is an offshore 105, 10 metre workboat with twin 140hp turbo diesel engines.

There is a large cabin area with workstation, 240, 24 and 12 volt supply for electronics and equipment. It also has a large open deck area being fitted with winch and davit for deploying sampling equipment up to 125 kg. YDSA coded for 10 passengers plus crew of two.
