Biography

I have an MSc in Aquatic Biology from University of Portsmouth and BSc in Environmental Biology from Lancaster University. My MSc research project studied parasitology in Echinogammarus marinus. My current research interests head more towards water quality and control.

Research

My current research is the study of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and the fate of PAHs found in road runoff. SuDS are used in urbanised areas to help mitigate the increased risk of flooding. They are designed to mimic the natural environment and are used to slow down, divert and retain storm water and road runoff.

Water from road runoff contains many pollutants, and my research aims to provide further information on the mechanisms involved in PAH removal as the water flows through the SuDS. I have developed a model swale (grass channel) and simulated road runoff to create storm events. Analysis of soil samples via GCMS will show where reductions in pollutant levels occur.

Results from this research will give further reliable information to developers and planners with regards to the benefits of using green SuDS and inform future design codes.
