Biography

I am an aquatic biogeochemist with particular interest in pelagic carbon cycling and the microbial ecology of Regions Of Freshwater Interest (ROFIs). I studied for a BSc in Marine Biology at the University of Liverpool where I stayed to complete my PhD investigating the relationship between physical processes and carbon dynamics in temperate shelf seas under the supervision of Dr Claire Mahaffey. Since then I have been a postdoctoral researcher on the NERC-funded Christchurch Harbour Macronutrient Cycles project, originally at the University of Southampton with Professor Duncan Purdie and now at the University of Portsmouth with Dr Gary Fones. My current research is focussing on the impact of sediment resuspension on carbon and inorganic nutrient fluxes in a shallow UK estuary (Christchurch Harbour, Dorset).

Research

  • Nutrient and carbon cycling in temperate estuarine systems including across the sediment-water interface
  • The role of storm events on riverine inorganic and organic nutrient fluxes
  • Pelagic phytoplankton-bacterial coupling in shelf seas and in Regions Of Freshwater Influence (ROFIs) globally
