I started at the University of Portsmouth as an Applied Physics undergraduate back in 1984. I have left the institution a number of times and worked in industry and at other Universities, but somehow I have always ended up back at Portsmouth. My PhD was in the controlling of material properties in hexaferrite materials to gain the best microwave/magnetic performance, particularly in polycrystalline form, both for coatings and ceramics for device applications. I have since worked in many related areas such as using doped hexaferrites as catalysts in cleaning air pollution, making high performance nano-magnets, the beginnings of what is now millimetre-wave imaging and a range of other projects for government agencies and industry.
I occasionally work with the Equality Challenge Unit in London chairing or as a member of Athena-Swan panels and am a member of the University of Portsmouth's Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team. Previously I organised and ran the University's ethnic minority mentoring scheme for a number of years. I am currently a member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences and the IET.
Outside of work my main interests are kayaking, marine technology/history, photography and travel.
