Alex Sabine is a Teaching Fellow in Further Education and Training. He previously worked as a lecturer in a Further Education college, facilitating Higher Education courses in early years education, engineering and teacher training. Having worked in a broad range of educational provisions for over a decade, including SEND settings, Early Years, Further Education and Higher Education, Alex feels passionately about inspiring teachers to find a teaching methodology that suits their personal philosophy of education and has published several journal articles to further explore these interests. He is currently working to establish a sustainable learning community which prioritises holistic health and wellbeing by applying principles of sustainability and ecopsychology to education. Alex also has an interest in technology enhanced learning, and is currently applying the skills developed during his MA to develop effective distance learning programmes of study.

Alex’s research is focussed on exploring the educational principles that underpin learning communities throughout the UK and abroad. He is interested in how cultural norms affect educational environments and how people’s personal ontologies can distort or enhance the learning process in a communal sense. This interest has led to a post-honours study into the effects of nature on personal development and an attempt to identify universal themes that honour the human being’s ability to self-heal and find meaning. This endeavour neatly synthesises Alex’s various interests in the application of therapeutic principles in educational practice.
Key aspects of this research include:
- exploring the underpinning principles of successful learning communities
- the holistic effect of adopting pedagogical principles of creativity, exploration and immersion in nature
- locating concrete activities, resources and methods that support the holistic development of children and adults in natural learning environments.
