Joy entered Higher Education with a practitioner background, having spent the previous 5 years working as the teacher in charge of the nursey and education service manger in a local family centre that provides services for families with children who have special needs and disabilities. Joy is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has received the University Learning & Teaching Excellence Award 2007 for excellent contribution to students learning experiences in relation to group project on enhancing critical thinking, and the Foundation Direct Prize 2007 for exceptional contribution to the development and delivery of (HEFCE funded) Foundation Degrees.
Main teaching responsibilities have been in the area of Early Childhood Studies with a particular interest in children’s play and development and how this contributes to overall wellbeing of children. She takes the lead on a unit exploring communication with young. She currently also teachers research methods on the Masters programme and is unit coordinator for a unit on the Prof Doc related to professionalism. In addition she supervises dissertations at Undergraduate and Post graduate level in a wide range of Early Childhood and education based topics. She is 2nd second supervisor for a PHD on that is looking into how degree education prepares pharmacists for the workplace

Joy has a wide range of research interests that have emerged from her interests in young children and collaborative working with local practitioners in the early childhood and school sectors.
