Biography

Ian has, since 2015, worked as a Learning Development Tutor for the School of Education and Childhood Studies, offering development to students at all levels wishing to enhance their skillset for academic success through one-to-one and small group discussion. In 2016-17, he was nominated for a student support award by University of Portsmouth Students Union.

Teaching Responsibilities

Previously, Ian taught English for five years across various UK settings including examined adult education courses in English literacy, English as a Foreign Language within language schools, and English for Academic Purposes on university Pre-Sessional courses. Through these experiences, Ian encountered learners, both home and international, presenting at all levels from virtual illiteracy through to Higher Education, meaning he can tailor his approach to assist a student’s own English and literacy development, no matter what their starting point is.

Research

Ian’s complementary research interests in students’ Academic Literacies include the student ‘voice’ within writing, effective source use, argument construction and feedback usage.  He completed an M.A. in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at University of Portsmouth, the thesis for which investigated problems and solutions for non-native speakers when citing others’ works. Ian has presented this research at two international conferences focused on English for Academic Purposes.

Ian will begin a Professional Doctorate in 2017, which will use both Applied Linguistics and Education methods such as language corpora and discourse analysis to examine how academic feedback can become maximally accessible and beneficial for the 21st century student.

Institutional contributions

Ian is a member of the UOP’s Higher Education Forum and ‘Language Across Borders’ research cluster. He gained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2016. During 2016-17, Ian developed e-learning resources for students, including seven tailored workshops for SECS students and working on a project with the Academic Skills Team to pilot the embedding of Palgrave-MacMillan study skills units within course delivery.

Previous experience

Prior to entering the teaching profession in 2010, Ian had ten years of business management experience in retail and high-street banking as well as voluntary work supporting young people and adults with both mental health issues and learning difficulties. He also holds a Level 2 diploma in counselling skills.
