Supporting Learners in Practice

The significance of supporting student nurses within the practice setting cannot be over emphasized. Being a mentor is a very important role, in terms of guaranteeing that nursing students who graduate as registered practitioners are competent for their role.
Why choose this unit?
On successful completion of this short course, delegates will become a Stage 2 Mentor. This short course offers opportunities to develop understanding, knowledge and skills essential for the delivery of excellence in care in person centred practice. Participants will also reflect upon their own practice, therefore, developing their skills as positive role models.
This unit is offered to registered adult nurses who have at least one year post qualifying experience, and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The registered adult nurse must have been identified as eligible to support student nurses from the University of Portsmouth. Proof of support from your manager will be required as part of the application process.
This is a blended learning unit and a selection of the content includes:
- The role of the practice facilitator.
- Facilitating and enhancing learning opportunities.
- Principles of Assessment and Evaluation.
- Practice Facilitators accountability and responsibility.
- How students learn.
- What students learn in practice
How often will the unit run?
This short course will be offered four times a year. Each trust will be offered a number of places.
How can I apply?
Unfortunately all courses for the remainder of 2017 are currently over subscribed. However, more courses will be on offer for 2018 later this year. All Learning Education Leads and Practice Education Facilitators will be contacted when dates become available.
How much will it cost?
This unit is free for registered adult nurses who meet the entry criteria.
Evaluation of learning:
- Two practice based teaching observations
- Completion of 30 hours protected time with a student nurse
- A reflective account of one of the practice based teaching observations.
