Biography

I gained a first-class BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Southampton before joining the laboratory of Professor Steve Wood for a PhD in Biochemistry. My doctoral project used the technique of X-ray crystallography to develop potential drug compounds targeting the pentraxin family of proteins.

In 2005 I moved to London for a post-doctoral position working for Professor Sir Mark Pepys FRS at the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins, UCL Medical School. Here our work on depleters of C-reactive protein (CRP) was published on the front cover of Nature. A second project, developing small molecules targeting the serum protein Transthyretin, contributed to the group being awarded one of the first Wellcome Trust Seeding Drug Discovery Initiative awards. This work was subsequently patented and licensed to GSK. In 2010 I was promoted to senior post-doctoral research associate in the newly founded Wolfson Drug Discovery Unit where I continued working on similar projects in close collaboration with industrial partners and the NHS. Whilst conducting this research I developed an interest in Research Ethics and completed a bachelor’s degree in Humanities with Philosophy (OU) followed by a master’s degree in Research Ethics (Keele).

I joined the University of Portsmouth in April 2012 as a tenure-track Senior Fellow, and in 2014 received a BBSRC project grant to study serum DNA scavenging. I also received funding to develop projects exploring reporting bias and ethics committee consistency. In 2016 I was appointed to a dual role as Senior Lecturer and University Ethics Advisor. This latter role has included re-writing university policy and overseeing the institutions research ethics and governance arrangements.

Alongside my university roles I chair the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee (MODREC), Hampshire A (NHS) research ethics committee, lead the REWARD Alliance regulation and governance working group, and am a member of the National Research Ethics Advisory Panel. I also act as a consultant helping organisations (including government departments) develop their research ethics and governance procedures.
