Biography

I worked in both frontline and management positions in several local authority adult social care departments for over two decades, principally with disabled and older adults, before moving into an academic role whilst completing his professional doctorate in social work (DSW) at the University of Sussex (awarded 2012). I also hold an MA in Health and Social Policy (University of North London), a first degree in European Studies (University of Lancaster), professional qualifications in both management and specialist rehabilitation (visual impairment), and additional qualifications in counselling skills. I joined the University of Portsmouth in 2010 where my teaching focuses on adult social care policy and legislation, research informed practice, interprofessional and interagency collaboration, as well as adulthood and ageing in the context of human development and the lifecourse. I have since been awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My professional and research interests focus on older people, sensory impairment as well as comparative adult social care policy, particularly in Germany. I speak fluent German and have extensive professional and academic contacts in Berlin. I am currently interested in how the specific health and social care needs of older people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual are being addressed.
