Biography

I joined the academic staff at Portsmouth University in September 2012 after 12 years working as a Paramedic and Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) with South Central Ambulance Service, NHS Foundation Trust (formally Hampshire Ambulance Service Trust). My current position is my first within academia although I did have previous experience of University of Portsmouth and the paramedic course as a part time hourly paid lecturer.

Professionally, I qualified as a paramedic in 2002 and I was one of the original ECP’s in Hampshire, trained as part of the Department of Health’s pilot program in 2004. Subsequently I was instrumental in establishing ECP’s operationally in South East Hampshire and continued to work as a full time ECP until 2007, at which point, I became a Clinical Supervisor responsible for the operational mentorship of Student Paramedics. I still retain a contract with the ambulance service and continue to work operationally.

My current Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities include study at level 7 at Southampton University where I’m working towards an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.

Teaching Responsibilities

Since January 2014 I have been Course Leader for the Paramedic Science programmes and as a subject specialist most of my teaching is with paramedics, spanning all year groups, as part of the BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science Degree. I am unit coordinator for paramedic specific units as well as working across other programmes including pharmacy, Operating Department Practitioners and Human Physiology.

Outside of teaching I am an active member of The College of Paramedics both as a previous Alternate Council member and as a current member of the Post Graduate Curriculum Design Group.

Research

I am currently part of a small research team undertaking a pilot qualitative study investigating the challenges to the formalisation of paramedic education and the professionalization of the paramedic role.
