I qualified as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) in 1979, and worked in clinical practice primarily for the NHS until the late 90’s. As a senior practitioner I undertook commissioning of anaesthetic services for a new Day Surgery Unit and a Main theatre complex; carried out a skill mix review as an external consultant. I spent a number of years as a Practice Educator and more latterly gained management experience within the NHS as a Theatre Manager.
I moved into higher education and led the development of the ODP programme as it moved from a vocational award into Higher Education. I have a number of external roles including subject reviewer for QAA Major Review, Partner with the Health and Care Professions Council as an education visitor and a CPD assessor; and strong engagement with the Professional Body (College of ODPs) and I was for a number of years elected as Director of Education for the CODP Education Committee.
My interests lie in the quality aspects of curriculum delivery in relation to placement learning, simulation and CPD opportunities for perioperative staff in the operating theatre.
