School of Languages and Area Studies
We offer a modern and well-equipped learning environment, based in the University's iconic Park Building. Here you'll find lecture space, seminar rooms, IT spaces and the offices of your lecturers. Research students have access to their own Postgraduate Centre. You'll also have access to the modern library, with thousands of books, DVDs, maps and electronic resources, and a thoroughly integrated virtual learning environment.
As you study with us, you may use our Learning Resources Centre (LRC) and its variety of open access resources (books, magazines, videos, DVDs and audio cassettes), our sophisticated multimedia learning laboratories and the services of our Learning Support Tutors.
Sony Virtuoso language labs
On Language courses, our four state-of-the-art Sony Virtuoso Language Laboratories offer you and your lecturers a rich, multimedia language-learning environment where video, sound, text and Internet sources can be integrated and manipulated on screen. Our staff are at the forefront in exploiting the potential afforded by this technology to create packages of materials tailored to the course you follow.
Learning Support Tutors
The LST team is on hand to support ANY student studying a course in SLAS to improve their academic and English language skills, and to increase their confidence. Support is available in person, online and through workshops and the Global Café. Read more.
Online Course Developers
The School has three online course developers supporting the work of the teaching staff, offering students an educational experience at the cutting edge of technology-enhanced learning and allowing lecturers to focus on their teaching and the research that informs it.
Learning Resource Centre
Augment and enhance your learning outside class with the recently redeveloped LRC, at the heart of the School and available to all students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Facilities available include:
- Networked PCs and wireless laptop area, with facilities for printing, scanning and photocopying.
- An extensive collection of foreign films, documentaries, audio recordings and other study material, with viewing / listening stations in the Centre.
- Live satellite broadcasts in 8 languages as well as English, linked to a number of monitors for viewing programmes and to video recorders to enable off-air recording.
- A large collection of books, including graded course material for teachers, self-access texts for students and reference resources such as dictionaries and grammar books and magazines.
The resources centre now incorporates a multi-media workshop where students are able to create rich presentation and assignment materials. A variety of software and audio–visual tools are available including PowerPoint, Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and software for creating audio recordings and Podcasts etc.

If you are having any problems studying a modern foreign language, we run drop-in sessions where you can discuss these on a one-to-one or group basis with a tutor. We can provide you with guidance to improve your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills as well as your grammar. The Language Corner is located in the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) in Park Building and sessions are available at different times during the day.
