What you can expect from the clinic

The Citizens Advice Portsmouth (CAP) offers clients advice on a range of issues such as money and debt; housing and homelessness; employment; family problems and immigration matters. Students will provide face to face and telephone advice in the Bureau's busy city centre office, CAP, a registered charity and one of the first in the country, has been working in the City for more than 75years, it has provided free and confidential help, information and advice to the residents of Portsmouth since 1939. Each year CAP advisers and assessors assist more than 4,000 individual clients with more than 15,000 problems, of which over 9,000 include at least one debt.

Students will undertake training to achieve the Citizens Advice Certificate in Generalist Advice Work; this is a competency based qualification which involves self-study via training packs and e-learning modules, as well as observation and shadowing of interviews and working with an experienced adviser. The training programme covers interviewing skills (including working through the advice process; dealing with difficult clients; challenging discrimination) case recording and file structure/organisation; building knowledge in all the main enquiry areas (using the Citizens Advice Information systems). It is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in communication, client managment and for working in a team.

What will it cost?

The CAB Service is free.

Where is the Portsmouth CAP based?

CAP operates from two sites in the Portsmouth area; the City centre office is based in Winston Churchill Avenue and a service is also offered on several days a week in Northern Road, Cosham.
