Biography

Nationality:                               Supervisors: Dr Panos Kapotas/Dr Daniel Bedford                  Year of graduation:

I studied both my undergraduate and masters in law at the University of Exeter between 2012 and 2016.  At masters level I specialized in International Human Rights Law.  This gave me a good platform to start a PhD in September 2016 which focuses on the European Court of Human Rights.

Examining the relationship between human dignity and equality at the European Court of Human Rights: Is dignity the best way to promote substantive equality?

Research Synopsis:

My research examines how the European Court of Human Rights can legitimately increase the scope of protection under Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights through the use of Human Dignity.  Part of my research will include a comparison of the European case law under Article 14 with the case law of South Africa and Canada, where dignity has been relied on more substantially in the equality cases.

My research will aim to establish a new direction for the ECtHR in which there can be a legitimate expansion of Article 14.  This will result in the protection of more vulnerable people who would otherwise be victims of discrimination and inequality.
