Biography

During a career as a naval officer I qualified as a barrister, before leaving the RN to become a Commissioner at the Criminal Cases Review Commission, investigating miscarriages of justice. Whilst in the RN, I completed an LLM (Business Law) at Portsmouth University. I have wide judicial experience, ranging from courts-martial to immigration and asylum appeals, and have also held senior ombudsman and regulatory appointments.

A salaried Employment Judge since 2009, I initially worked in London, and am now based in Southampton. I hear Employment Tribunal cases involving discrimination and employment disputes. A Master of the Bench at Gray’s Inn, I am involved in the professional and advocacy training of Bar students.

Research

My main research interests relate to the law of organised religions, and the position of religion and belief in secular law. I recently completed an LLM (Canon Law) at Cardiff University, where my dissertation was on workplace religious discrimination. I now teach on the course, whilst researching a part-time PhD on Ecclesiastical Courts. A member of the Law and Religion Scholars Network, I serve on the committee of the Ecclesiastical Law Society. I am also interested in researching employment and discrimination/human rights law, as well as miscarriages of justice, professional regulation, litigation and dispute resolution.
