I came to University of Portsmouth in 2005, after teaching English and Media Studies at the universities of Lancaster and Glasgow and working in the public sector late 1990s. I take an interdisciplinary approach to Media Studies, combining interests in media, politics, critical theory and textual analysis.

In addition to my academic writing, I like to write for a range of popular publications and I maintain a media review blog.

Teaching Responsibilities

I teach across the Media and Film curricula at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I am Year 3 tutor for Media Studies and am involved in a range of work outside the university, from external examining to editorial work for academic journals.

My research focuses on the representation of socio-political issues in screen media. I have published numerous books, book chapters and journal articles about a variety of subjects, but my principal areas of research interest are: the mediation of war and conflict, cultural images of mental distress and trauma, and critical theory.
