I am currently completing my PhD at the University of Portsmouth. My research involves working closely with Portsmouth pharmacys’ Health Champions to develop an educational network to sustain continued engagement in health and well-being services through the Healthy Living Pharmacy project.
Through my research I have identified the key drivers for participation in the project. These include the opportunity for further professional development, the engagement of all team members within the pharmacy and the prospect of addressing the local community’s health needs.
Since graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 2007, I have sought opportunities to be involved in the provision and development of training for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
During my five years as a community pharmacy manager, I held the responsibility of training lead for the region; supporting the training needs of 36 pharmacies and over 150 staff. This included a mentor role and frequent visits to stores where individuals required additional guidance through their in-house and external training.
I have been involved in teaching and developing the NVQ3 Pharmacy Technicians programme at Highbury College over the past 4 years. This experience has allowed me to develop skills of teaching to larger groups and to explore effective class-room management techniques.
I joined the Pharmacy Practice team in October 2014. During this time I have participated in teaching and facilitating Pharmacy Practice modules across the four stages of the pharmacy masters degree. Currently I am involved in the stage 1 module, introducing Pharmacy Practice to our new students, including dispensing and communication skills, law & ethics. I am also co-ordinator for Inter-Professional Education, supporting and developing our practice placement portfolio.
My main teaching involvement is in medicines management and delivering public health services. I have also developed training material for the Continuing Professional Development of practising pharmacists.
I am currently working towards Fellowship status of the Higher Education Academy through the APEX framework.
