Biography

Charlie Leddy-Owen joined the University of Portsmouth in September 2013 shortly after being awarded his PhD from the University of Surrey. Before then he completed an MRes in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict from Birkbeck, University of London and a BSocSc in Politics from the University of Manchester.

Teaching Responsibilities

At Portsmouth Charlie teaches an optional second year module, ‘Race, Ethnicity and Society’, a third year module, ‘Nationalism and Migration’, as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Research

His core research interests concern issues of race, ethnicity and nation. Charlie’s doctoral thesis, from which he has published four journal articles, looks at the extent to which identifications as English are racialised. One of these articles, ‘Reimagining Englishness: "Race", Class, Progressive English Identities and Disrupted English Communities’ has been nominated for the 2015 SAGE Prize for Innovation and/or Excellence.

In early 2014 Charlie undertook a research project exploring attitudes to immigration in the vicinity of an immigration removal centre. Findings from the project were recently presented at a conference at the University of Brighton and at a Political Quarterly roundtable at Birkbeck, University of London. Charlie also spoke at a conference arranged by Portsmouth organisation Friends Without Borders (formerly Haslar Visitors Group) in September. An article drawn from the study has been published in The Political Quarterly as part of a special issue exploring the politics of immigration with another article recently published in Space and Society.

In 2015 Charlie conducted qualitative research in the constituency of Portsmouth South relating to the General Election.
