Scientific Testing and Research Facilities
Marine Research and Consultancy
We've got a long heritage in marine sciences
We’ve developed the sites, facilities, equipment and the expertise that leading businesses want. We specialise in a wide range of commercial research including (but not limited to) marine efficacy testing of antifouling products, biofilm growth and characterisation, exposure testing of novel building materials, treated wood analyses, and marine micro-plastics. We service industries from marine and maritime, construction (marine and terrestrial), renewable energies, engineering and utility providers. Our client list includes QinetiQ, Bre, Thales, Balmoral and the Research Council of Norway.
"The centre has a really good capability for exposing our concrete specimens continuously to seawater and to a marine climate as part of our research programmes. They were really helpful in meeting our requirements and also provided useful background information on the conditions at the site."
– Andrew Dunster, Bre
"The IMS Marine Testing Centre of Portsmouth University has performed a number of marine antifouling trials for Balmoral Comtec Ltd, using their research platform in the Solent. Their knowledge of the subject, their enthusiasm in designing the trials and their professionalism in performing and reporting same have always been to the highest standard."
– Dr Oram, Balmoral
Marine testing facilities for hire
Our new, state-of-the-art Marine Research Raft is available for hire on a short or long-term basis. We offer efficacy testing and exposure trials of novel marine antifouling products, combined with biofilm testing and analyses. You can also hire aquaria facilities within our Aquatic Centre which offers a range of research services, from treated wood samples to exposure testing of novel building materials. All of our research is bespoke to meet the needs of our clients.
Our marine biology research facility comprises of:
- Marine research raft in Langstone Harbour
- Research vessel RV Chinook for inshore and offshore work
- Aquatic Centre including aquarium rooms with temperature-controlled, flow-through seawater systems
- Teaching laboratory and lecture theatre with capacity for 120 delegates
- Suite of general, molecular, histology and sediment laboratories
- Terrestrial exposure and abrasion testing
