Despite the recession, major developments have continued in the central business district of London and the iconic Shard building is only the most recent product of that process. This course consists of two elements: a guided walk and a lecture. It will allow delegates to see buildings that form the ‘City Cluster’ and to examine aspects of their design and development and their commercial success. It will begin at Liverpool Street Station and will include, amongst other landmark buildings, the Gherkin, the Cheesegrater, Lloyds and One New Change – from the roof of which there is a commanding view of the Shard. The lecture will follow in the Guild House lecture room on Borough High Street.

The course covers:

  • the principal landmark buildings
  • their history, design and development
  • commercial success and prospects
  • new schemes in the pipeline

Transport links: Meet at Liverpool Street main line station which is served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan underground lines and many bus services. Course finishes at Borough High Street, and the nearest station is London Bridge, which is served by the Jubilee and Northern (City Branch) underground lines.

The course is being led by David Thompson, former Magazine Art Editor, London Blue Badge Tourist Guide and City of
London Guide, and Lecturer in the History of English Architecture both historic and contemporary.
