Energy efficiency has become a key issue with regard to the design of new buildings and in the market for existing buildings which fall somewhat below current standards. Professionals need to understand the issues, the newer technologies that have emerged and are emerging, and the extent to which they may be retrofitted. This course addresses that need. It explores some of the many challenges with regard to energy efficiency and production in property development and includes policy issues but concentrates primarily on the practicalities such as the ways in which technologies can be incorporated into new buildings and the viability and practicability of retrofitting them to existing buildings.
The course includes:
- setting the scene about sustainability in the built environment
- new build (energy efficiency standards of residential and commercial buildings, their strengths and weaknesses; an overview of best practice technologies; what works at what scale in terms of capital and life cycle costs)
- retrofit (possibilities for existing buildings including a case study; benefits and challenges in economic, social and environmental terms; what works and what pays)
Jae Mather is co-founder and Director of Sustainability for the Carbon Free Group and has built a major reputation as
