Access and inclusive design have become major influences with regard to the design, layout and updating of property and the requirements to meet needs and secure compliance have significant cost implications. This session provides a practical insight into the interpretation and application of the Equality Act, with particular focus on access for disabled people and people with additional needs. It explores the legislative framework, the wealth of information available, mandatory and best practice standards, and key tools such as access statements and audits that are used for performance measurement, status reports and action planning. It uses case studies to demonstrate the principles in practice.

The course includes:

  • the Equality Act 2010
  • access and egress for all
  • case studies and real life examples
  • application to a variety of building types, including residential, commercial, retail and public buildings
  • new build appraisals and adaptation of existing buildings
  • future proofing (sustainability) of the building stock
