"Welcome to the website for students at the University of Portsmouth."
Sign up for your Google account at www.google.com/a/myport.ac.uk using your normal University username and password.
You have been set a nickname which you will need to verify before you can use it. Your nickname will be in the instruction email recently sent to you. To verify your nickname, follow the instructions at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&ctx=mail&answer=22370.
Your nickname is based on your first name and surname, for example email@example.com (or firstname.lastname@example.org for similar names) which makes your email address more personal. Use this nickname as the 'email address you would like to send from' under point 6 in the above instructions.
Once you have verified your nickname, make sure you set it as your default name by returning to Google mail SETTINGS, ACCOUNTS and selecting nickname as DEFAULT. You will still need to use your username and password to log in to Google applications, but you can use your nickname to send and receive emails.
From Friday 1st May all email sent from the University will be delivered to your Google mail account. No email will be sent to your old account within Netmail. You will still be able to access your Netmail account to view old emails, or you can manually forward old emails into your new myport account if you would prefer.
Don't forget to sign out of all Google applications when you are finished, particularly when using a shared PC.
If you have any questions about setting up your account please contact the IS Service Desk on +44 (0)23 9284 3265 or email@example.com.
