Junior Year Abroad

Who is the JYA programme designed for?

We are pleased to offer a Junior Year Abroad (JYA) programme for students whose first language is not English and who would like to spend part of their time at Portsmouth developing their English skills.

You will spend a study block focusing on English language, followed by one term of subject study. The English language study block will be delivered by Language Specialists International (LSI).

LSI is the official English language partner of the University of Portsmouth. With over 25 years of experience, they are located close to the University and are part of the University community.  Classes are small and friendly, enabling you to grow in confidence with your English before you join University classes.

Accommodation

For your first term whilst you are studying English language at LSI you will live with a host family. This is ideal for students coming to Portsmouth from overseas for a shorter study programme, as it offers a more secure, family atmosphere.

When you join University classes you can either opt for university accommodation (Halls of Residence) or private accommodation.  You will need to apply for accommodation after you have secured a place on the Junior Year Abroad programme.

Please note that accommodation for the first term of academic study at the university (Programme Structure A) is offered for a set period from Saturday 14th September 2013 until Saturday 4th January 2014.

If you choose to arrive earlier than 14th September, you will be offered accommodation from Saturday 7th September. This will be in the room that has been allocated to you if it is available, or an alternative room until your permanent room is ready. You will pay for any nights prior to 14th September directly to the Hall reception.

Our programmes do not include accommodation during the vacation period, as students prefer to travel outside Portsmouth at that time. Students will need to make their own arrangements for accommodation during the vacation periods.  For information and assistance please contact the Student Housing team.
