Family

familyWe recognise that many staff combine work responsibilities with domestic or caring responsibilities and offer support to help staff successfully combine these. The Human Resources Department website provides information on the University’s family friendly entitlements covering the following areas: Adoption, maternity, paternity leave and pay, parental leave, time off for dependents and right to request flexible working. The detail of how these policies apply to you are set out in your contract of employment.

Nursery

The University Nursery was established in 1979 and provides full day care for children aged six months to five years. The Nursery is provided as a student facility, although sometimes places do become available for the children of University staff. Parents are recommended to apply for a nursery place as early as possible as there is a waiting list, which is longest for the children aged under two years.

Childcare Voucher scheme

The University’s Childcare Voucher scheme has now closed to new registrations, although existing members are able to continue to remain in the scheme for as long as they are employed by the University and meet the eligibility criteria.

HM Revenue and Customs tax credits

HM Revenue and Customs website provides information on tax credit eligibility for benefits such as working tax, children, new UK arrivals and Over 50s.

Working Families

The University of Portsmouth is an Employer Member of the Charity ‘Working Families’: Changing the way we live and work. Working Families is the UK’s leading work-life balance organisation. The charity helps working parents and carers and their employers find a better balance between responsibilities at home and work. Working with employers to provide support in creating workplaces which encourage work-life balance for everyone.

A free Legal Helpline gives parents and carers advice on employment rights such as maternity and paternity leave, rights to time off in an emergency, and parental leave, as well as helping them to negotiate the flexible hours they want. They can give basic advice on the benefits and tax credits that working parents can claim. They also give advice on maternity discrimination and pregnancy discrimination.
