General Information
Family
We recognise that many staff combine work responsibilities with domestic or caring responsibilities and offer support to help staff successfully combine these. The Human Resources Department website provides information on the University’s family friendly entitlements covering the following areas:
Adoption leave and pay
Childcare vouchers
Maternity leave and pay
Paternity leave and pay
Parental leave
Time off for dependents
Right to request flexible working
The detail of how these policies apply to you are set out in your contract of employment.
Nursery
The University Nursery was established in 1979 and provides full day care for children aged six months to five years. The Nursery is provided as a student facility, although sometimes places do become available for the children of University staff. Parents are recommended to apply for a nursery place as early as possible as there is a waiting list, which is longest for the children aged under two years.
For more information visit www.port.ac.uk/nursery.
Childcare Voucher scheme
The University provides a Childcare Voucher scheme. Managed on our behalf by Edenred, the scheme allows staff with children to take some of their salary as vouchers to use for childcare whilst making savings on tax and National Insurance.
If you are using registered or approved childcare, you can choose to take part of your salary in Childcare Vouchers to pay for it. Buying Childcare Vouchers can give tax and National Insurance (NI) savings which means you get extra value from your pay packet each month.
HM Revenue and Customs tax credits
HM Revenue and Customs website provides information on tax credit eligibility for benefits such as working tax, children, new UK arrivals and Over 50s.
