Google for staff students
If you are a member of staff and also a registered student you will have a student Google account and can therefore access all the applications within Google to help you in your studies. If you are teaching staff you may find that your students are emailing you on your student account, as the addresses are now based on names and can be easily found. We recommend that you forward your Google Mail account to your staff account in Groupwise, so that you don't miss important emails.
Accessing your Google account
Already have a student computer account?
If you already have a student computer username (e.g. cam52087) and password you'll need to log in as a student and use the Google links on the homepage of the student website to access Google. Log in to Google with the same student computer username and password.
Don't have a student computer account?
Go to www.port.ac.uk/studentaccount and follow the instructions to obtain your student computer username and password. This will allow you to log in to many University student systems, including Google.
Once you have your username and password, you'll need to log in as a student and use the Google links on the homepage of the student website to access Google. Log in to Google with the same student computer username and password.
Once you've logged in to one of the Google applications you can go into any of the others at the top left of your screen.
Your email address
Your main email address will be automatically allocated based on your name, for example firstname.lastname@example.org. Duplicate names will have a number at the end. You will see this email address once you've accessed your Google Mail account.
You will also have other email addresses based on student references, for example email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. These are mainly for teaching staff to use when emailing you as a student as they are held in central record systems. You will receive emails from all these addresses automatically into your Google Mail inbox.

Forwarding to Groupwise
- Log into your Myport Google account via the gmail link on the student website
- Select settings
- Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
- Select Forward a copy of incoming mail and enter the Groupwise mail address ie email@example.com and save changes.
The recommendation is to retain the mail in the Google account, so select keep University of Portsmouth Mail's copy in the inbox.
