A musical by George and Ira Gershwin, based on the book by George S. Kaufman.
The original 1927 version of this, the first of the Gershwin/Kaufman satirical trilogy, slaughters sacred cows right and left when America declares war on Switzerland over cheese import tariffs! With skulking villains, unrequited love, Marx Brothers-type insanity and a patriotic triumph at the final curtain, all graced by a glorious Gershwin score (featuring the title number, Yankee Doodle Rhythm and The Man I Love), Strike Up The Band still strikes plenty of sparks.
This show is produced by Sophie McAdam-Clark with the full University symphony orchestra in the pit, conducted by Colin Jagger. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.
