Case management (known as care management in the UK) is an approach to working with individuals in complex care environments. Originally developed in the USA in the 1970s it has since been adopted internationally in many different welfare contexts. This seminar will take as its focus case/care management in the provision of care services for older and disabled adults in England and Germany.

Drawing on Dr Crossland’s doctoral research, for which he spent four months studying a case management service for older people in Berlin, and Professor Ehlers’ extensive professional and academic expertise we will consider in particular the challenges presented by both ‘translation’ and establishing equivalence of concepts in comparative research and how this may affect what and how we can learn from experiences in other countries.
