PBS Curriculum Enhancement Day (CED)(2 of 2)

Learning from the Experts: Active and Experiential Learning at this CED 2 event, three expert practitioners in the field of active and experiential learning will describe how academics can incorporate active learning into teaching with higher education students.

After the keynote speakers in the morning, there will be a further iPad demo session led by Joe Moretti, followed by a review of a trial of iPads used in the teaching of Portsmouth MBA students, and a review of apps available to students on the DCQE 'Appshelf'.

There are also afternoon sessions that are drop in (no tickets required), for those who would like to learn more about using Camtasia Relay and Moodle Quizzes in teaching with HE students.

Professor Robert Beichner (North Carolina State University) is the creator of the 'SCALE-UP' programme that was joined by over 100 US universities, and has led to dramatic learning gains for students, in particular for less confident, female and minority students. Dr. Beichner, who is professor of physics, and a leader in the research and development of new technologies in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) classrooms, received the McGraw Prize in Education in 2011. Professor Beichner will describe his experiences of bringing in a revolutionary way of interacting with students that dramatically increases their attendance, engagement, and academic performance for relevant courses.

Mr. Joe Moretti (In2IT) Joe has a BA Hons in Music and an MA in Creative Music Technology from Bath Spa University. An experienced musician, musical director/arranger on numerous projects and shows, Joe has been teaching since 1982 and has considerable teaching experience in Further Education and Higher Education institutions. Joe is an Apple Distinguished Educator, certified Pro Apps trainer and an Apple Professional Development in Education expert. Joe is currently working on a PhD focused on examining the use of Technology in Education. Joe was recently a speaker on the Mobile Learning stand of the BETT Show 2013. His introduction of GarageBand at BETT 2012 can be viewed at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opz7LylFAxI . 

Joe will demonstrate good uses of a number of iPad apps, including the Doceri, Notability, NearPod, and others, mixing it up with music making using GarageBand! 

Mr. Chris Finn (Assistant Director, Operations, RAF Cranwell, formerly Group Captain Chris Finn) – like Dr. Peter Lee, a speaker at CED 1 – has contributed to doctrine included in ‘Air Power Review’ compiled by the Centre for Air Power Studies. A specialist in electronic warfare, weaponry, and tactics, he has over 3,200 flying hours, 2,240 on the Buccaneer. During the Gulf War, he served in Air Headquarters, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Group Captain Finn also spent 20 months as an airpower specialist on the directing staff of the Joint Services Command and Staff College.

Chris will describe how the development of 'Air Power Staff Rides' has been led by students in a form of riveting experiential learning.
