Fighting against hate crime and religious extremism
Time: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Venue: Park Building, room 3.03
Starting with the practical experience of key professionals, this workshop will address two related issues 'How to fight hate crime, motivated by religious reasons' and 'How to fight religious extremism'. Particular attention will be given to anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Methods and policies to tackle religious radicalisation will also be addressed, with specific references to Portsmouth.

- Michael Whine, MBE, Government & International Affairs Director, Community Security Trust at Community Security (CST)
CST is the only organisation in the country dedicated to collecting, analysing, responding to and publishing statistics relating to anti-Semitic crimes. CST represents the Jewish community on a wide range of police, governmental and policy-making bodies dealing with security and anti-Semitism. Indeed, the police and government have praised the CST as a model of how a minority community should protect itself.

Faith Matters is a not for profit organisation founded in 2005 which works to reduce extremism and interfaith and intra-faith tensions and develops platforms for discussion and interaction between Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jewish and Hindu communities across the globe. They have offices in the United Kingdom, Pakistan and the Middle East (Jerusalem).

The Hate Crime - Racial Awareness Service is located at the Portsmouth City Council, civic offices. Charlie Pericleous and PC Steve Hawkins will provide an overview of the Hate Crime Service and practical examples of how it deals with hate crime and tackle extremism locally. Training packages delivered to frontline workers will be presented.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception at Blackwell Academic Bookshop, Cambridge Road, Portsmouth for the launch of the following two books:
