What is higherness? Conceptualising HE in the new vocational HE

Thu, Mar 25, 2010

Presenters: Ann-Marie Bathmaker (University of the West of England, Bristol)
Time: 15.45 - 17.30
Venue: Nuffield Hall

As part of strategies to increase and widen participation in English higher education, there has been a renewed emphasis on vocationally-related HE. This has involved new qualifications such as two year Foundation degrees, as well as the introduction of new ‘vocational’ subjects. These developments present a challenge to traditional understandings of ‘higherness’, as well as creating tensions between making HE accessible and developing new forms of HE ‘knowledge’.

Ann-Marie Bathmaker is Professor of Education at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Her research is in the broad field of vocational education and lifelong learning, focusing on the relationship between policy and practice. She is interested in social justice and in/equalities in the context of people’s changing experience of learning, education and training. She was co-director of the ESRC-funded Further Higher Project, a study of Widening Participation, which was part of the ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme
