I joined the Portsmouth Business School in 2016 as a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management after completing my PhD from Loughborough University. I also hold an MSc in International Management from Loughborough University, and a BA in Sociology from China University of Political Science and Law.
Before moving to the UK, I worked at China-Africa Business Council, a non-profit organisation funded by the United Nations Development Programme. My engagement with business and entrepreneurship included exploring business opportunities for Chinese and African entrepreneurs, creating entrepreneurial projects for poverty alleviation in Africa, and conducting research on CSR in Chinese SMEs.
My current research interests focus on social entrepreneurship and sustainable entrepreneurship in China. I have also participated in funded research projects and international conferences.
I currently teach units in entrepreneurship at undergraduate level. I am the unit coordinator of Business Venturing, I also teach other undergraduate units such as Business Innovation Development Project and Business Enterprise.
My research interests lie primarily in the field of entrepreneurship, including social entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship, social capital theory and empirical application of critical realism in entrepreneurship research. My current research explores the relationships between social capital and opportunity development in the context of social entrepreneurship in China. My other research topics include understanding the role of social capital in sustainable entrepreneurship in China, and the decision making process in Chinese family businesses.
