Academic Skills Unit - ASK
The Academic Skills Unit (ASK) provides advice and guidance on specific academic and study skills. These are essential in order to progress as a student, from Access courses, through undergraduate to doctoral research. ASK holds a stock of resource material and provides one-to-one teaching and small group sessions on topics such as:
- Revision techniques
- Report and essay writing, including word processing
- Time and task management skills, including mind-mapping techniques
- Presentation skills, including using Microsoft Powerpoint
- Working in groups
- Research and evaluating sources
- IT and web searching skills
- Referencing
- Critical thinking and writing
- Reading and writing techniques, including grammar and spelling
ASK is for any student, on any course, at any level.

Maths Café
Get a better taste for maths and be more successful on your course?
The Maths Café is an initiative provided by the Maths Department for the benefit of the whole University. On the menu:
- A friendly informal environment
- Daily drop-in sessions
- Help with any maths or stats query
- One-to-one support
- Work sheets on common problems
- Computer-aided learning material
The Maths Café is a daily drop-in facility, where any student of the University can receive help on maths or stats problems they encounter in their studies. This facility is located at various informal venues around the campus. Handouts on key topics are available to take away. If appropriate, students will be shown how to use computer aided learning packages, which can be accessed via the University's Computer Network.
