We continue to invest heavily in our sporting facilities, ensuring that you have plenty of opportunity to take part in whichever sport interests you.

Performance sport

The Athletic Union oversees more than 50 clubs ranging from mainstream sports such as football, netball, rugby and hockey to the more extreme such as skydiving, roller hockey and octopush. The clubs cater for all abilities from the elite through to the more socially motivated.

Our location provides an excellent base for water sports, and the Union provide a number of thriving clubs such as sailing, rowing, water-skiing and canoeing.

Recreational sport

As well as representing the University and joining a club, you can also maintain your general health and fitness.

We run a number of intramural competitions such as five-a-side football, mixed netball, squash leagues and mixed volleyball. There are also more than 40 fitness classes a week ranging from yoga and boxercise, to spin cycling and boot camp.

Sports facilities

Our three sports centres house two sports halls, squash courts, two dance/martial arts studios, a synthetic turf pitch, netball courts and grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse.

We have a 100-station gym with a CV room, resistance zone and free weights room. The University also works with a number of local clubs to provide access to water sports facilities, swimming, trampolining and riding.

Visit the Sport and Recreation pages to view a Virtual Tour of our facilities, check opening times and how to join.

Sports development

Our sports volunteer programme, ?UP for Sport? means you can gain coaching qualifications and deliver sporting programmes in the local community.

The coaches are mentored through the programme and you can gain some real experience, with many of the placements leading to paid work.

Elite sport

Our sports scholarship scheme offers sports science support, facility access, academic and personal mentoring, physiotherapy and fitness programmes, all tailored to the individual athlete?s needs.

The University has strong links with a number of local elite clubs, and some recent elite performers at the University include Sarah Webb (2004 Olympic gold medallist sailing), Chris Draper (2004 Olympic Bronze medallist sailing) and Alex Danson (England Hockey Senior International).
