The Centre of European Studies and International Research is pleased to present the conference Algerian and Arab Revolutions: An International and Comparative Perspective.

Fifty years on from Algerian Independence and one year on from the Arab Spring, the conference will place Algerians and their histories within an international and comparative perspective.

The conference will take the form of a series of themed workshops designed to make historical links across time and space. For this reason CEISR is also looking for specialists from other countries and regions.

Call for papers

The conference invites papers and panel proposals on the following themes:

  • Algerians and the Muslim world
  • Algerians and the Arab world
  • Algerians and the Maghreb
  • Algerians and decolonisation
  • Algerians and the USA
  • Algerians and the Communist world
  • Algerians and Non-alignment
  • Algerians and human rights
  • Algerians and the question of gender relations
  • Algerian cinema, novels, poetry, theatre
  • Algerians and the history of the press in the Arab world
  • Algerian diasporas in the world: France, Europe, the US
  • Algerians and the new media: Satellite television, Facebook and Twitter
  • Algerians and the Arab revolutions of 2011

The deadline for paper and panel proposals is Friday 28 October 2011. These should take the form of a 200 word proposal to be emailed to donna.ferrand@port.ac.uk.
