Safer Students: Protect your bicycle

Portsmouth is a flat city and ideal for walking and cycling. Cycling is cheap, ecologically friendly and a great way to move in the city.

Bring your bicycle or buy one in Portsmouth and you will have a great time here, as long as you use your common sense and apply the following Safer Students tips:

Register and mark your bicycle

  • register your cycle online using the University’s Property Registration service (please note that this will not insure your belongings but will help if the police finds your lost/stolen property)
  • record the make, model, frame number, and any other identifying features of your cycle
  • mark your property with both an ordinary marker pen and an ultraviolet (UV) pen to create identification visible and invisible to the naked eye

On the streets

  • do not leave your cycle in isolated places
  • use the secure cycle storage provided by the University
  • use a ‘Sold Secure’ approved D lock
  • lock the frame of your cycle to the locking point and whenever possible include the wheels, especially if they are quick release

  1. I am currently in my first year at Portsmouth Uni and staying in Margaret Rule Hall. Can I leave my bike down in Portsmouth over the summer holidays as I will be America during June/July/August?

I will then be back just before freshers week for my second year.

Ideally it would be great to leave it in the bike room at Margaret Rule Hall (where I keep it now).

    Many thanks

    • Dear Len, please talk to the Reception desk at Margaret Rule Hall for advice on this.
