Volunteer with read international

read international is looking for Project Interns who want to make a difference while at university.

What’s read international?

read international began life in 2004 as a small project based at the University of Nottingham, founded by a group of socially entrepreneurial students following a gap year teaching in Tanzania. Now there are almost 1,000 student volunteers involved, operating from a network of over 45 universities across the UK.

What does read international do?

read international collect any books from anyone and anywhere throughout the UK, but it focuses its efforts on collecting textbooks and children’s literature from secondary schools. read international sorts the books and sends the most relevant, up-to-date, and high quality books to schools in Tanzania and Uganda. Any books collected which are not relevant or appropriate to send are sold online or recycled to generate funding.

What’s a Project Intern?

A project intern is committed to managing the read Book Project in his/her university along with three other interns. They are ambassadors of read international both in their university and in their community.

Project Interns are motivated and enthusiastic students who have a high degree of maturity, integrity and commitment. They are not afraid of a challenge and are ready to honour a year-long commitment.

What will I do?

Regardless of their individual position, each project leader is responsible for the project and its good functioning throughout the year. This leadership position is a good opportunity to develop skills in project and volunteer management and organisation.

How much time will it take?

Each project leading position will require a commitment of roughly 10 hours per week. The workload will vary at different times in the year.

What will I get out of it?

  • Develop a portfolio of skills which you can take with you when you graduate, for either the voluntary or private sector.
  • ‘Give something back’ and help thousands of children both in the UK and East Africa.
  • Gain invaluable experience in project management, volunteer management and fundraising.
  • Be given real responsibility and ownership of your own project.
