Marketing expert Ying Wang (Wendy) has been appointed general manager of the University of Portsmouth’s China office, in Shanghai.
Wendy is taking over the management from Dr Ming-He Yang, who has retired.
Wendy was part of the original China office team when it was established in 2006 and has recently spent 15 months in Portsmouth studying for her MBA International.
She hopes to continue to establish the University of Portsmouth as a strong brand in China by highlighting what the university excels at, including a wide range of support for Chinese students, internationally excellent research, a fantastic location and a fascinating history.
She said: “The hidden intrinsic qualities of the University of Portsmouth wouldn’t be known to many people in China without advertising so much of my role will involve spreading the word about Portsmouth through publicity, exhibitions, relationship marketing, and digital and marketing.
“There is no doubt, the stronger the brand – the more the name and qualities of Portsmouth are known and understood – the greater the opportunity for us to recruit excellent students from China.
“The University of Portsmouth provides a wide range of support services for Chinese students and has many excellent cultural and research exchange projects with Chinese institutions, though not many people here are aware of that. I hope to help market Portsmouth as an exceptional place to learn and develop.”
Chinese students at the University of Portsmouth currently number 926, about a third of the total number of international students studying at Portsmouth.
Many former students from China have joined a thriving chapter of the alumni association and meet regularly to network and find ways of supporting current students, including through offering internships in their companies.
