Follow the Reader
Ross Lamport, from the Department of Sport and Recreation, writes for Staffessentials about the University Staff Sports Day 2012:
“Ravelin Park was again gifted with the only dry day since February for the University Staff Sports Day. Thirteen teams from across the University ran back and forth with an egg, a sack, a bean bag, and a rope, and lashed together with an elastic band for the ultimate prize.
First to show their pedigree were previous champions Follow the Reader and Pompey Port Royals to steal the Sack Race. Joining them ICP Warriors and The Incredibles would share first to fourth finishes to dominate most of the relay races.
The Incredibles
New to the mix this year were the Librarian athletes So Solib Crew, keen to dismiss any bookish non-sporting stereotypes, with inspired team performances in the three legged race and Tug of War. Newcomers Higuitas Fireworks were slow to burn but triumphed in the inflatable obstacle course. First timers Hoorah King Henry’s rattled the opposition and a few bones with a confident and determined fourth in the Sack Race.
Despite a great Tug of War from The Incredibles and a storming skipping race from ICP Warriors, they couldn’t quite catch the tenacious Readers. Celebrations continued post games at a local cafe, not before Follow the Reader ran the entire length of Ravelin Park in delirious joy with winners’ shield held aloft.
Many outstanding performances contributed to a magnificent day, and the Department of Sport and Recreation got even closer to its fundraising target for Brain Tumour Research.
