Following a successful pilot, Vice Chancellor’s Executive has approved the rollout of Google Apps for Education to all University staff. Google Apps will replace GroupWise and will provide email, calendar, contacts, and more.
What happens now?
The Project Team in Information Services are aiming for a go-live date – known as G-Day – of December 2012. An exact date has not been confirmed. In the run-up to G-Day, the Project Team will be working closely with representatives, called User Champions, from each area of the University to ensure that the transition to Google Apps is as smooth as possible.
Do I need to do anything?
Not right now. The Google Apps Help website will be available from the end of September, and will provide details on what needs to be done before G-Day, as well as tutorials and guides that will help staff to familiarise themselves with the service.
Anything else I should know?
Your email, calendar and contact data will automatically be copied into Google Apps. Due to the considerable amount of information involved, this process will start on 17 September 2012.
This process will not affect your use of GroupWise in any way, however please be aware that any emails or folders that you delete after 17 September 2012 may continue to appear in Google Apps when you first log in. In no case will emails or folders be lost.
How do I find out more?
The Google Apps Help website will be available from the end of September 2012, but if you have any questions in the meantime please direct them to the Project Team by emailing gms-project@port.ac.uk.
