Nearly 2,700 students thronged to the recent University of Portsmouth graduate recruitment fair, the largest-ever audience at the event.
The fair attracted 55 employers with an estimated 1,500 possible jobs for graduates. IBM sponsored the event and among the employers attending were Amazon, Cap Gemini, Xytratex, Philips and Hewlett Packard.
Employers of every size were invited to attend to recruit new graduate staff and to offer work placement opportunities to those still studying.
Head of Employability Julia Hughes said: “This year’s graduate fair was the most successful yet in terms of number of students and graduates who attended, the employers we attracted and the way the students prepared for the event. All the employers I spoke to were very complimentary about the calibre of students.”
The fair was held at the city’s Guildhall and many of the employers tweeted positively throughout the morning posting photographs on Twitter of their stands surrounded by students and graduates discussing employment options.
Employability is one of the University’s key strategic aims and it has a clear commitment to students and employers that students will develop the knowledge, skills and qualities required for the global workplace.
Every faculty has a dedicated Careers Adviser who advises lecturers and students on opportunities for future employment options, work-related learning and placements.
Employers help shape the curriculum too, with many giving up their time to give guest lectures in subjects ranging from engineering to journalism and from teaching to social work.
The Employability Department’s next events include a Teaching Fair on January 11, 2013, a Law Fair on February 20, and CREATE in March. To find out more, visit: http://www.port.ac.uk/careersandrecruitment/
